“Brought Near by the Love of God”

Summary
We so often ask the question, “Why” when we are in times of pain, suffering, and grief. We don’t ask that question when things are going well and we are experiencing great blessings, but when things go wrong, we want an explanation. Matthew and Mark stress that in the cross of Christ we do not receive explanations of suffering, but we get an answer. We get the answer of a loving Savior who took our place. He was afflicted that we may be healed. He was cast off so that we could be brought near in the love of God. “What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul!” (LSB Hymn 543).
