Our Communities

At Calvary, anyone can be involved in Worship, in Service, and in Our Communities.  Communities are some of our less formal groups, where people gather for fellowship, fun, service, and support.

Prayer Team

Prayer Team

✝ Calvary Lutheran‘s prayer ministry Team started 18 years ago after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.  Since that time a small group of intercessors has met weekly.  The team receives prayer request from the congregation and pastors.  Intercession is also made for our nation, its leaders as well as the body of Christ worldwide.  We especially pray for the ministry of Calvary Lutheran church and school.

We team meet every Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the EPIC Center.  We gather all year long and prays whether 2 or 20 people meet to pray.  We especially pray for the ministry of Calvary Lutheran church and school, and we also pray for any special requests received in the prayer box.  These prayer requests are kept confidential as they are lifted to the Lord each week.  The team supports the school chapel for the National Day of Prayer.

This is a come-as-you-can ministry — there’s no specific time commitment.  If you are struggling with a certain need, you are welcome to join us on Thursday, and the team will pray for you.  Anyone who is struggling is welcome to come and feel the power of prayer as you pray or to receive prayers.

This group is led by Laura Currier and Jan Meiners.

Blankets for Babies

Blankets for Babies

Our mission is to assure expectant parents of the love of God for them and their infant.   We knit and crochet blankets for their newborns.  Each blanket has a tag sewn in.  The tag has a cross and says "God's blessings from Calvary Lutheran Church".  The majority of these are given to the Life Center on Hanna Ave.

We meet once or twice a month on Thursdays, 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the cafe area.  All skill level and ages are welcome- ladies are available to give instructions to beginners.

Community leader is Susan Daniels.

Quilters

Quilters

Quilting Group, Thursdays at 9:00 a.m.

Looking for something to do on Thursday morning? The quilting group is now meeting every Thursday from 9:00-11:30 a.m. to make simple quilts for missions. We send quilts to El Salvador and India with our mission teams and for Lutheran World Relief.  At present, we’ve been asked by IU Methodist to discontinue Puppy Pillows and make comfort quilts for trauma patients.

If you can use a pair of scissors, an iron, a needle or a sewing machine, or if you have an eye for coordinating colors, we’d love to have you.  We have a lot of fun and fellowship as we work. We love to teach others, so come join us on Thursday. Questions? Jan Dunaway, 317-292-2968 or Judy Kirkland, 317-885-8512.

Activities include cutting squares to be sewn together for the quilt top, sewing 10 inch fabric squares together to make a 60 inch by 80 inch quilt top, adding backing to the quilt (which can be fabric or a sheet), and tying the quilt in various locations to bind the front and back together.  Members often donate cotton fabric and sheets (clean, used, or new sheets – size full or larger).

In 2015 and 2016 over 100 quilts were made for Lutheran World Relief. The quilts were given to refugees and people in need.

Community leader is Judy Kirkland.

Sew Blessed

Sew Blessed

Sew Blessed meets from 9:00 AM to noon on the 3rd Saturday of every month in the Narthex by the church mailboxes. We share sewing tips and techniques and well as projects we’re working on or have completed. We normally sew blankets or quilts and donate them to various ministries such as the Calvary Bazaar, Camp Lakeview Dinner Auction, LuFest, LWML, Blankets for Babies, etc. Our goal is to sew, socialize, and share, but not to create more UFOs (UnFinished Objects).

If you want to learn more about Sew Blessed, please contact Sandra Wilson.

Happy Souls

Happy Souls

Stretching and Light exercise for adults of all ages

Happy Souls is a group of adults that meet once per week to stretch and exercise.  We open with Bible readings and a short devotion.  After a warm up session we stretch, work with light hand weights, work our arms and legs with resistance bands,  and do light calisthenics. All the while enjoying fellowship and the company of fellow believers.

Whether it's doing the "Penguin", Les's "hand tapping", Nancy's "weights behind your head" or Barb's "Pretzel", there is something for everyone...

Class meets on Thursdays at 1:00 PM in the South Narthex.  The time is flexible if anyone has a conflict.  Adults of all ages are welcome — please consider joining us!

Smart reasons to stretch

There are lots of good reasons to regularly carve out more time to stretch:

  • Stretching may reduce your risk of getting injured.  Cold, stiff muscles and tendons are more prone to injuries such as ruptures, sprains and strains.
  • Stretching helps minimize stress. Stretching helps release everyday stress; combining it with deep, mindful breathing will enhance the benefits even more.  Research shows that practicing yoga can lower your blood pressure, improve your cholesterol levels and triglycerides, lower your heart rate and aid weight loss.
  • Stretching can improve your posture. Over time, poor posture can make your muscles short, tight, weak and stiff.  Stretching counteracts this and improves your physical function and mobility.
  • Stretching protects against back pain. Eighty percent of adults will experience low back pain at some point in their lives.  Stretching can be both a prevention and a treatment for backaches or injury.
  • Stretching enhances your productivity. Research shows that moving your body can help sharpen your attention and focus, which could make you more productive.
  • Stretching enables you to age gracefully.  Stiff, rigid muscles don't have to be a part of aging.  Stretching is crucial for staying agile and limber.  Greater flexibility helps.

Zumba

Zumba

Ditch the workout, Join the Party...

What is Zumba? It is a dance fitness program centering on Latin and International rhythms. You will find upbeat music and choreographed dance moves that you may see in a dance club. Alternating between high and low intensity movements, it is an interval workout designed to get your heart rate up and boost cardio endurance.  A Zumba class emphasizes moving to the music and having a good time with (surprise!) no rhythm required... so really, it is exercise in disguise!

You don’t have to be a dancer to feel welcome in our class, nor is there a right or wrong way because calories fall away no matter if you move left or right..just as long as you move!  No need to worry about memorization of moves either as the steps and sequences are repeated throughout the songs and one will get it down pat in no time.  Do join us for an hour of Fun, Dance and Even Sing along if you feel like it!

When: Saturday 9-10 am
Where: Calvary’s Gym
Cost: $6 (drop-in)
          $30 (6 session punch pass)

Community leaders are:
     Faith Wesstrom (licensed instructor)
      Rosemary Batteiger

Chorale

Chorale

Come join us and make a joyful noise...

We lift our voices in praise to our God!

The Calvary Chorale is an adult group that meets weekly for practices on Thursday nights at 7:00 PM.  We sing at worship services throughout much of the year.  We especially gear up for Christmas, Holy Week and Easter.  The last several years we have also sung in a concert with the Joy Swing Band.  We take the summer months off to recharge and accommodate vacations and travel.

Adults of all ages (high school and up) are welcome.  No specific experience is required.  If you like to sing and want to lift up your voice in praise to the Lord, come join us!  New singers are always welcome, and we need all voice ranges.

Community leaders are Andrea Durkee and Julie Pflug.

Handbells

Handbells

The men and women who are part of the Calvary Handbell Choir use their talents to enhance our worship experience through their music.

Ringers practice most Thursday nights during the fall, winter and spring seasons.  No specific musical training is required.  If you have the desire to serve the Lord through music, let us know.  We are always looking for people to join us!
